The more ways your child learns something the easier it will be for them to understand it. Encourage your child to explore information and ideas by seeing, hearing, and doing.
Seeing
Drawing pictures can help your youngster visualize concepts. Have your child make a comic strip based on a nonfiction book. Each frame could show one step in the water cycle or in the process by which a bill becomes a law. They can even add dialogue bubbles.
Hearing
Suggest that your youngster spell words or say addition or subtraction facts aloud. Also, ask them to talk about what they are learning. You might have them explain photosynthesis or a math strategy to you or a sibling.
Doing
Hands-on experiences help your child understand ideas. If they are studying the solar system, pretend to be the sun and have your child be the earth. Tell them to spin their body (rotate) and walk in an orbit (revolve) around you. When they learn about pioneer times, they can do homework by candlelight or wash a shirt by hand to have a better idea of what life was like before modern conveniences.
