Mrs. Vanya Jackson is honored to serve as principal of Stevens Forest Elementary School. Entering her 24th year in public education, she began her career as a second-grade teacher in Montgomery County before teaching first, third, and fourth grades in Howard County. Since 2018, she has served the Longfellow Elementary School community as assistant principal and principal.
Mrs. Jackson earned her Bachelor's degree from Mars Hill College and her Master's degree from McDaniel College. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate degree, reflecting her commitment to lifelong learning. Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Mrs. Jackson is passionate about helping young learners discover the joy of learning. She also loves dinosaurs, so students may spot a few prehistoric friends around her office!
Mrs. Jackson and her husband are the proud parents of three adult sons, all HCPSS graduates. She believes in the power of education to change lives and is committed to ensuring that, in the spirit of Many Trees, One Forest, every child feels seen, valued, challenged, and inspired to reach their fullest potential. She looks forward to partnering with students, families, staff, and the community for a wonderful year of learning, growth, and success.
Casey Schurman, EdD, NBCT

Dr. Casey Schurman has proudly served as the Assistant Principal at Stevens Forest Elementary School for the past several years. She brings 20 years of experience in education, with a diverse background that includes classroom teaching, special education, intervention services, and instructional leadership. Throughout her career, Dr. Schurman has remained committed to supporting student success, empowering educators, and creating inclusive learning environments where every child can thrive.
A National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT), Dr. Schurman is passionate about advancing the teaching profession through mentorship, professional learning, and leadership development. She supports National Board Certification candidates across the Howard County Public School System and serves as an adjunct instructor at Towson University, where she helps prepare future special education teachers. She believes that meaningful reflection, collaboration, and high-quality instruction are essential to educator growth and student achievement. Dr. Schurman earned her doctorate from Johns Hopkins University, where her dissertation focused on developing cultural competence in early career teachers.
Outside of school, Dr. Schurman enjoys spending time with her dog, Dozer, volunteering, gardening, traveling, and cheering on the Orioles and Ravens. She is honored to serve the Stevens Forest community and values the strong partnerships among students, families, and staff that help every child succeed.

LEED Certification
Stevens Forest Elementary School was given a LEED certified Silver Status in 2014.
LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Stevens Forest Elementary School is among a small percentage of Howard County and Maryland schools to have earned LEED certification, which recognizes a commitment to environmental sustainability.
